A lighting rig feels professional when the audience can see the performers, the looks change intentionally, and nobody trips over the setup.

Use this plot to plan a compact lighting rig before rehearsal, load-in, or a first paid gig.

01

Fixture roles

  • Assign each light a role: front wash, side wash, backlight, accent, movement, or atmosphere.
  • Keep at least one readable performance look that does not rely on strobes or movement.
  • Use color to support the set instead of changing constantly because the fixture can.

02

DMX and control

  • Write down fixture addresses, channel modes, and scene names before the show.
  • Test controller changes at rehearsal volume and room brightness.
  • Carry a spare DMX cable and know how the rig behaves if one fixture is removed.

03

Safety and transport

  • Place stands outside traffic paths and secure knobs before doors open.
  • Tape cable crossings with real gaffer tape and route power thoughtfully.
  • Pack lights, controllers, clamps, tape, and cables in dedicated bags or cases.

Mistakes this checklist prevents

  • Buying moving lights before the stage has a good basic wash.
  • Programming every fixture in sound-active mode and calling it a show.
  • Forgetting bags, tape, spare DMX cable, and power planning until load-in.
